Once Baxter closed the city of Spokane had no immediate plans to use the grounds where the hospital was. It was suggested in 1946 that the land and facilities be given to the VA to use as a new hospital as the nearest veterans hospital was in Walla Walla at the time. It wouldn't be until all of the facilities and equipment had been sold to outside parties that the city was finally followed through on the suggestion.
